Through the elaboration of the principle of the "kinesphere", Rudolf Laban, practitioner and theoretician of dance, questions the harmonic relations between space and human movement (choreutics); he develops the possibility of a physical embodiment of form, and of spatial traces and virtual forms in space.

The American engineer A. Michael Noll, a researcher at Bell Laboratories, produces _Computer-Generated Ballet_, the first computer-generated film presenting a choreography entirely created by a computer.  In 1967, he publishes the article "Choreography and Computers" in the journal _Dance Magazine_.

"9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering" is a series of performances that took place in October 1966 at the Armory in New York, during which ten artists - John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Öyvind Fahlström, Alex Hay, Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Rainer, Robert Rauschenberg, David Tudor and Robert Whitman - and about thirty engineers from Bell Telephone Laboratories (Murray Hill, New Jersey, United States) collaborated in order to develop scenic propositions mixing theater, dance and new technologies. According to researcher Clarisse Bardiot (2006), their collaboration gave rise to numerous "firsts" in the use of new technologies, for which the change of context revealed their aesthetic potential, and allowed them to foresee the future impact of computer technology on the performing arts.

The choreographer Jean Babilée created _Le Temps partagé_ in 1973 for the ORTF, a ballet whose choreography and music were calculated by computer with the composer Pierre Barbaud. The latter generates scores written on a plotter, composed with the help of a _Time-Sharing_ console, then performed by instrumentalists.

Analivia Cordeiro, Brazilian artist and dancer, produced _M3X3_, one of the first dance choreographies created specifically for video, using computer image processing to record dance movements. With her _"computer dances" - 0° ↔ 45°_, version I and II, _Gestures_ and _Cambiantes_ - which she created between 1973 and 1976 and broadcast on Brazilian national television, Cordeiro reinterpreted the language of dance and choreographic notation. The choreographer continued to explore the use of the computer with _The Programming Choreographer_, in 1977. In 1982, she developed a computer program for movement notation with Nilton Lobo, "Nota-Anna", written in Fortran IV and then in C language.

Analivia Cordeiro, artiste et danseuse brésilienne, produit _M3X3_, l'une des premières chorégraphies de danse créée spécifiquement pour la vidéo, utilisant le traitement d'images par ordinateur pour noter les mouvements de danse. Zella Wolofsky, a kinesiology student at the time, began research with Thomas W. Calvert, an engineer and computer scientist, and later with Thecla Schiphorst, an artist and researcher, at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, to apply computer interpretation to Labanotation. This research led to the development of the computer program _LifeForms_, developed with choreographer Merce Cunningham. This program grew out of an earlier software environment, called COMPOSE, which allowed for the composition of dance scores on screen using 3D animated body models.

Close to the artists of the minimal and conceptual art of New York, Trisha Brown presents _Locus_, whose system of notation is constituted by a diagram which resembles a choreographic map. An open and arithmetical structure, _Locus_ is similar to a generative dance system in which the dancer places himself at the center of an imaginary cube. Each point of the cube is defined by a letter of the alphabet, allowing the dancer to be surrounded by twenty-seven points in total. The performance consists of writing a name, a sentence or a text by pointing, touching or jumping over each letter-point with a different part of the body.

Proche des artistes de l’art minimal et conceptuel de New York, Trisha Brown présente _Locus_, dont le système de notation est constitué d’un diagramme qui s’apparente à une carte chorégraphique. Structure ouverte et arithmétique, _Locus_ s’apparente à un système génératif de danse par lequel le danseur se place au centre d’un cube imaginaire. A chaque point du cube est défini une lettre de l’alphabet, permettant au danseur d’être environné de vingt-sept points au total. La performance consiste à écrire un prénom, une phrase ou un texte en désignant, touchant ou sautant par-dessus chaque point-lettre avec une partie du corps différente.


John Lansdown, an architect by training, founder of the Computer Arts Society in 1974 and professor emeritus, achieves an immediate visual simplification of the human figure, as suggested by Merce Cunningham as early as 1968, to create key positioning images. The dancers then have the freedom to develop the intermediate movements. Lansdown began his research into computers and choreography as early as 1968, while also observing research into architecture, music and poetry.

With _The Catherine Wheel_, American artist Rebecca Allen creates, with dancer, choreographer and writer Twyla Tharp, a computer-generated dancing character in a video dance piece produced and broadcast by the BBC, with music by David Byrne. The work is among the first and most complex examples of 3D computer-generated human movement.
At the New York Institute of Technology Computer Graphics Laboratory, Allen produced the animation by determining key frames that then allow the calculation of a continuous motion of the dancing figure. The model comes from the first 3D computer model of a female body, created in 1972 by Ed Catmull, but which had not yet been used.

The American choreographer Merce Cunningham develops with the Computer Graphics Research Lab, at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, the digital movement writing software LifeForms. In 1991, he created _Trackers_, the first piece using an early model of the software, with an electronic composition by Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta. _Biped_ in 1999, will be based on Character Studio and LifeForms software, developed from a MacLaban system. The piece features digital animation created as a visual set with Paul Kaiser and Shelley Eshkar, widely considered a breakthrough in the integration of dance and technology.

_In Plane_ combines dancer Dawn Stoppiello with music and images generated via MIDIdancer, a suit equipped with bending sensors at the elbows, wrists, hips and knees. A background projection coincides with a live solo performance. Founded by musician and programmer Mark Coniglio and choreographer Dawn Stoppiello, Troika Ranch is one of the first companies to develop its own hardware and software systems. These are specifically designed to transmit real-time motion data from dancers to control musical and visual scores.

The Barriedale Operahouse group of artists, based in London and Vienna, was founded in 1994 by Michael Klien and Nick Mortimore. They developed the concept of a software tool to structure and control the different elements of a performance, such as sound, video and movement. The software, named ChoreoGraph, is designed to allow the manipulation of a series of different color modules along a timeline. In 1998, for the first performance using this prototype, _Solo One_, each colored module represented a specific movement phrase and musical sequence, which the dancer could view on stage through monitors. A new version of ChoreoGraph was later developed in collaboration with Nick Rothwell for the creation of _Duplex_, a duet presented in 2002 in Frankfurt.

In search of a metalanguage to conceive and compose the dance *a priori* of the production of movement in rehearsal, Myriam Gourfink elaborates beginning in 1999 a system of writing based on parameters (forms, breathing, orientation of the body in space, direction of thoughts inside and outside the body, glances), as well as drawings and recursive reasoning, for the solo *Glossolalie* performed by Jérôme Bel. 

This writing system gives rise to an embryonic computer program that Myriam Gourfink, in collaboration with Frédéric Voisin (computer scientist and ethnomusicologist), Laurence Marthouret (dancer and choreographer specializing in Laban Notation), and Kasper T. Toeplitz (composer), will develop into a veritable dance writing software program called *LOL* (Laban on Lisp). A first iteration of this software will allow the writing of a second solo, *Taire*, performed by Laurence Marthouret from forms generated by the software and chosen by the choreographer. 

Unlike a software like Lifeforms, LOL does not rely on the anatomical constraints of the human body, but invites the choreographer to imagine and formulate hypotheses and constraints. LOL is thus an open composition software that represents, with the help of categories based on Laban notation, knowledge rather than gestures. Myriam Gourfink will use this software to write many scores, such as *L'Écarlate* (2001), for which Frédéric Voisin will also develop an artificial neural network trained for the specific needs of the piece.

Ce système d'écriture donne lieu à un embryon de programme informatique que Myriam Gourfink, en collaboration avec Frédéric Voisin (informaticien et ethnomusicologue), Laurence Marthouret (danseuse et chorégraphe spécialiste de la Notation Laban), et Kasper T. Toeplitz (compositeur), va développer en un véritable logiciel d'écriture de la danse baptisé *LOL* (Laban on Lisp). Une première itération de ce logiciel va permettre l'écriture d'un second solo, *Taire*, interprété par Laurence Marthouret à partir de formes générées par le logiciel et choisies par la chorégraphe.

Improvisation Technologies: A Tool for the Analytical Dance Eye_ is a CD-ROM resulting from four years of research at the ZKM Karlsruhe, which proposes to analyze the essential principles of the vocabulary of choreographer William Forsythe through video sequences. The research process for this CD-ROM was the basis for the creation of the piece _Eidos: Telos_ in 1995.

First version of _Loops_ which is derived from a filmed recording of Merce Cunningham's solo for hands of the same name (1971). A real-time animation generates a network of nodes, based on visual relationships established between the moving points of the choreographer's hands. _Loops_ has existed in four versions, the first three of which were performed live, creating a unique piece each time.

Une animation en temps réel génère un réseau de nœuds, à partir de relations visuelles établies entre les points en mouvement des mains du chorégraphe. _Loops_ a existé en quatre versions, dont les trois premières ont été réalisées en direct, créant une pièce chaque fois unique.


Researcher Scott deLahunta organizes a seminal workshop in London involving a multidisciplinary group of choreographers (Wayne McGregor, Siobhan Davies, Shobana Jeyasingh, and Ashley Page), digital media artists (Bruno Martelli, Joseph Hyde, and Guy Hilton), and software programmers who have also worked as artists and/or with artists (Christian Ziegler, Adrian Ward). DeLahunta jointly published a theoretical article entitled "Software for Dancers". At the beginning of 2002, he and the choreographer and artistic director Johannes Birringer organized the international think tank "New Performance Tools: Technologies / Interactive systems" at the Ohio State University, USA.

Choreographer Trisha Brown collaborates with OpenEndedGroup (Marc Downie, Paul Kaiser, and Shelley Eshkar) for the piece _How long does the subject linger on the edge of the volume..._. Eighteen infrared cameras capture the movements of four dancers in real time on stage. A complex system of analysis and graphic action, similar to artificial intelligence software, generates graphs and diagrams that are projected on a transparent screen at the front of the stage. Each diagram is generated live in 1/20th of a second intervals and updated immediately.

A video screen shows choreographer Emio Greco explaining and interpreting his choreographic movements, which the spectator can learn and reproduce live. Using a gesture recognition system, the device offers real-time visual and audio feedback on the quality of the movement reproduced and its understanding.

L’installation interactive _Double skin/Double mind_ invite les participants à découvrir de nouvelles interprétations de leur corps à travers les mouvements du programme Gesture Follower développé par Bertha Bermudez, Chris Ziegler, Frederic Bevilacqua, Sarah Fdili Alaoui. Un écran vidéo montre le chorégraphe Emio Greco expliquant et interprétant ses mouvements chorégraphiques, que le spectateur peut apprendre et reproduire en direct. A l’aide d’un système de reconnaissance de gestes, le dispositif offre en temps réel un retour visuel et sonore sur la qualité du mouvement reproduit et sur sa compréhension. 


Created by William Forsythe, Maria Palazzi and Norah Zuniga Shaw, in collaboration with Ohio State University, _Synchronous Objects_ is an online digital score in the form of graphic visualizations, soundtracks, 3D models, data, statistics, which reveals the organizational principles of William Forsythe's choreography _One Flat Thing, reproduced_ dating from 2006. A year later, phase one of the Motion Bank research project is initiated by the Forsythe Company, focusing on the creation of online digital scores with guest choreographers. Since 2016, Motion Bank is located at the Hochschule Mainz - University of Applied Sciences.

Un an plus tard, la phase une du projet de recherche Motion Bank est initié par la Forsythe Company, en étant axé sur la création de partitions numériques en ligne avec des chorégraphes invités. Kate Sicchio, choreographer and teacher, works in the fields of computer-generated choreography and live coding, with _Hacking Choreography_ (2012) and then _Hacking Choreography 2.0_ (2014) exploring the overlap of choreography with programming and coding languages, as well as the principles of computer hacking. As part of her research, she organizes "live coding jams" in which dancers react to notations projected on the screen.

The British choreographer Wayne McGregor develops the Choreographic Language Agent and then _Becoming_, in collaboration with Marc Downie and Nick Rothwell, allowing the construction of autonomous choreographic agents or an additional virtual dancer through artificial intelligence algorithms. This research had started in 2004, in collaboration with researcher Scott deLahunta. _Becoming_ was used for the development of the show, _Atomos_. In 2019, Google is releasing _The Living Archive_, an interactive atlas of half a million movements from the repertoire of choreographer Wayne McGregor.

Waltz Binaire's _Pathfinder_ is presented within the Choreographic Coding Lab (CCL), founded in 2013 as part of Motion Bank. Algorithms generate graphic patterns for the dancer to interact with, offering various transitions from one point to another.

Choreo3D is a choreographic editing software, created as part of the Choreographic Coding Labs, initiated in 2013. These traveling labs work on the links between dance-generated data and choreography with code. This initiative emanates from Motion Bank, a research project of the Forsythe Company to build an open-source library of dance.
